Stay Active In College

Students OutsideCollege is a transformative period in a person’s life. The better part of four years is dedicated to academic and professional growth, but what happens to your body during that time? Long periods of sitting, studying, and questionable food indulgences can all slow down your activity level. It can even affect your mood. Why not kick start a new chapter in life with your best foot forward? Here are some ways you can stay active while keeping your “gains” academic in nature:

Scope Out Campus Perks

Most colleges offer free access to their fitness center and athletic resources. Some campus gyms offer group fitness classes like Kickboxing and Yoga. It doesn’t just stop at a gym— it may also include Olympic-sized pools, tennis courts, and even trampolines.

Meet Degree Requirements

Since electives are free game, make the most of them. Art courses like ballroom dancing or martial arts can make for a pretty action-packed semester. Anthropology class may have intense local excavation digs. In Marine Biology, you might do research on a boat or the beach. Nutrition or Cooking courses might not give you a workout, but it will give insight into your diet and healthy living.

Stay Active in the Community

Community service requirements for graduation are becoming commonplace in higher education. Habitat for Humanity has several local chapters in each state, many of which recruit college-based volunteers. You can even grab your hammer and go abroad with Habitat for Humanity! Ever try and move 100 cases of canned food and cook for up to 500 people? Food pantries and shelters are always looking for volunteers, particularly around holidays. Beautification projects around town can include gardening, mural painting, trash collection, and wildlife preservation.

Check Out Campus Clubs

New outdoor sports and activity clubs pop up on campus every year. My alma mater, Monmouth University, even had a paintball club when I was a student. You could go on discounted ski trips, play volleyball, and even parkour. Clubs are often started by students, so go ahead and start a club yourself!

Tour Parks & Recreation

Going off campus and acquainting yourself with the county park system is a must. My home state of New Jersey has fantastic resources and activities in its parks. Boat tours, 5K races, camping, rock climbing, hiking, Ultimate Frisbee, surfing, fitness clinics, and more are offered. Like golfing? You can play county courses if you become a member. Disc golf has also risen in popularity so if you want to try something new, check it out.

Train for an Extreme Event

Are you ready for a Tough Mudder, Spartan Death Race, or Triathlon? Committing to a training schedule for extreme events is fun and keeps you motivated. Often when you register for events, you can get a team discount, too. Maybe you can start a club!

So get off that chair and get involved. Balance that GPA with a healthy meal and some fresh activities, and you’ve got the recipe for academic and personal success. Go get ‘em!

Last week, we talked about how a principle used in high altitude mountain climbing relates to the decisions we make during our adventures. Making better decisions in the backcountry means keeping this guiding principle in mind. If you missed that episode check it out and get all caught up!

29 Million People with Diabetes in the US

The CDC estimates that there are 29.1 million people in the US with diabetes; almost 10% of the entire population! High cholesterol and high blood pressure are more common than ever and to deal with all of this many people find themselves on a matrix of medications. One helps with the cholesterol but contributes to the diabetes and the one you take for that makes your blood pressure soar. It can be a vicious cycle. Christina Major discovered how to reduce her cholesterol without medications and now helps others find natural alternatives for diabetes and other conditions through her site Crystal Holistic Health.

About Christina Major

Christina Major is a nutritionist and healthy lifestyle coach. Christina Major is a Holistic Nutritionist, Herbalist, Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach, professional health and nutrition speaker and owner of Crystal Holistic Health Consulting. She is a published diabetes author and has created programs, virtual grocery store trips, home study programs, and is a host of a the Health Guardian Angels Weekly Support Group.

She was featured as the National Association of Professional Women, VIP Woman of the Year 2010 and speaks both locally and nationally through dozens of live events and teleseminars, sharing the wealth of healthy living. She can be seen on various tv programs talking about health and diet.

How did Christina Get Interested in Helping People?

At the age of 24 Christina found out that her cholesterol was high. Her doctor wanted her on medication but Christina wanted to find another more natural approach. Through diet and exercise she was able to bring her cholesterol down. This excited her and caused her to want to learn more. Through her education she found that her metabolic type was very fast and that was a factor in her initial issue.

How did exercise play in a role in her improved cholesterol?

Exercise caused Christina's body to use up fat and provide a better hormonal balance. She used up the cortisol stored in her body which had helped trigger the insulin production and caused the fat storage. Once she had that down to a really low level her body released the excess fat.

Exercise doesn't necessarily increase your metabolism, what it actually does is help you move closer to normal. Many of the foods you eat and the lifestyle you lead (if you're sitting around with low activity) is not what your body was designed for. Your body was designed to be up , active and eating natural food. Anything opposite of that is repressing your metabolism.

Helping Other People

Christina was encouraged to get out and help others, people in her situation, that didn't have the option and were on medications. People don't want to be on medications, it's a vicious cycle where one medication causes issues that require additional medications. People want natural alternatives to diabetes and other conditions.

Recommended Exercise

If you haven't exercised in a awhile one of the best things to do is to go for a walk. Walking is an outstanding exercise because it strengthens your muscles and tells your fat cells to go to sleep. Fat cells also produce insulin which suppresses leptin, the hormone in the body that tells us we're full. Exercise changes all of that. As you start walking more, you want to do more, to get outside and have fun. If you are a diabetic who has foot issues Christina recommends swimming to get active without having to put pressure on your feet.

What To Eat Before a Morning Workout?

Eating a Healthy SnackWhat should you eat before a morning workout?  You want energy and endurance but you don’t want to feel full or fatigued. Here are some excellent options to give you energy and stamina before working out in the morning.

Coffee

I’m a bit  of a coffee addict, especially the Green Mountain Pumpkin Spice.  The good news is that a little caffeine can be a good choice prior to your workout.

Because caffeine is a stimulant it increases your heart rate which in turn increase blood flow throughout the body. By increasing stamina and reducing fatigue, coffee can be a help for both short, intense workouts or longer endurance sessions.
